Waves Audio just came out with a totally revamped SSL channel strip called the SSL EV2 Channel. Redesigned from the ground up, this new plug-in does tip its hat toward the recently released CLA Mix-Hub plug-in. But, for all intents and purposes, it is meant to be a completely new take on this popular mixing console’s form factor and sonic fingerprint.
While I’m not ready to do a full and complete review of the plug-in, I did do some test drive videos that allow you to sit with me while I mix an entire song using this plug-in on every channel of my mix.

Over the course of the 4 videos, I show you many of the techniques that I use to mix and shape the sound of each source to come up with a “radio ready” / commercial quality mix.
– Part 1: I explain the reason why channel strip plug-ins are so important and why professional mix engineers like them. I also mix the Live Drums, Bass, and Guitar tracks for this song using the SSL EV2 on every channel.
– Part 2: I mix the Programmed Drums and Percussion tracks for this song using the SSL EV2.
– Part 3: I start by showing you how I set up and organize my mixing sessions in Pro Tools. Then, I mix keyboard and strings/orchestra tracks for this song. As I’m doing that, I show you how I use digital reverbs like Universal Audio’s UAD Oceanway Studios reverb to create a real-world sonic environment for sampled instruments.
– Part 4: I mix the brass & woodwind / orchestra tracks for this song with SSL EV2. I also take you through the process of taking my “static” mix and use automation to create drama & energy in my mixes.
